Iowa Cosmetology and Barbering Course
The Original La' James College offers a comprehensive 1,800-hour cosmetology and barbering course that meets the standards set by Iowa and many other state boards. This program includes a combination of cosmetology theory and supervised practical instruction.

Cosmetology is classified under Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Code 39-5012.00. This course is taught in English, and all enrollment materials are provided in English.
Cosmetology School Goals and Phases
Our program is designed to prepare students for licensure in Barbering and Cosmetology Arts and Sciences in Iowa. Students typically complete 35 hours per week, allowing them to graduate in approximately 52 weeks.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of of the 1800 hour course, the student will have the required technical abilities and the academic theories in compliance with the requirements of the State Board of Cosmetology. The skills and theories of each service shall be presented in a progressive manner permitting each student to acquire the maximum degree of technical ability and knowledge.
Level 1: Foundations (210 Hours)
Your journey starts with the Milady CIMA digital curriculum, and hands on demonstration and practice, where you gain foundational skills in:
Shampooing and blow outs, pin curls, roller bases, solid, graduated, increased, and uniform form hair sculpture, layering, hair coloring and lightening basics, waxing basics, manicure and pedicure basics, and the basics of facials and makeup .
From day one, you'll engage in hands-on learning, engagement with your teacher, and getting comfortable being in a salon and spa environment. You will have to pass a level 1 written exam and practical’s.
Level 2: Designers (630 Hours)
This phase builds upon your foundational skills, with a focus on:
Hair cutting, hair styling, hair coloring, chemical texturizing, men's hair design, skin care including waxing, nail technology, including Gel X application, product knowledge, nutrition, marketing, merchandising, introduction to the clinic, continuation of basic theory classes and guest artists.
Under the guidance of master stylists, you will start working with clients on the Salon Floor. you will also start working through a skills enhancement book that will serve as a valuable resource throughout your education. Before progressing to the next level, you will complete written and practical exams.
Level 3: Masters (630 Hours)
As you advance, you will refine your technical skills and efficiency while continuing hands-on client work. This phase includes:
Advanced chemical services, hair correction, color analysis, hair sculpture and styling, permanent wave, skin care including makeup/waxing, advanced nail technology, long hair graphics that include hair extensions and wigs, career planning, business strategies, resume building, marketing, product sales/knowledge, Iowa cosmetology law, salon management, client relations, advanced theory, and guest artists.
You’ll also explore the salon vs. spa experience, by visiting other spa's and salons, giving you a deeper understanding of industry expectations. Before progressing to the next level you will complete practical and written exams.
Level 4: Career Essentials (330 Hours)
Your final phase focuses on preparing you for a successful career, covering:
Client retention, professional etiquette, stress management, client records, inventory control, reception and dispensary, booking software’s, guest speakers, and preparation for licensure exams.
During this stage, you will continue working with clients, completing your skills enhancement book completing your final exam, and getting ready for state board examinations to launch your career.
